Confused about GRE or GMAT for MBA? Get your confu...

GRE: GRE means Graduate Record Examinations. It is a standardized test conducted by the Educational Testing Services. ETS GRE Scores are accepted by most of the top graduate level schools for Masters degree programs. GMAT: This means the Graduate Management Admission Test which is a computer adaptive test which is designed to predict how test takers will perform academically in MBA Programs. Like the GRE, it consists of a Verbal and Quantitative section. Unlike the GRE, the two sections are combined to give a composite score of 800. NOTE: The GMAT cannot be used in place of the GRE, so unless you are going to business school, do not take the GMAT. DIFFERENCE: Both GRE and Gmat have their own subjects of strengths and weaknesses. So GMAT maths is definitely more daunting and so if you struggle with Quant the GMAT will seem more difficult. On the other hand, if you struggle with the nuances of Vocabulary and style then GRE verbal section will prove to be difficult for you. But you shouldn’t assume that GMAT’s Vocab is easier. While GMAT is designed specifically for business school applicants, GRE is the test that can gain students accepted to graduate programs across all subjects which includes MBA in major. BASIC DIFFERENCE: GMAT GRE The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test The GRE, meanwhile, is not a computer-adaptive test. The GRE, as a more versatile test, has less of a focus of math and also allows a calculator for its quantitative problems. The GMAT has more focus on Maths. During the GMAT, students can't go back and review their previous answers The GREallows students to check their previous answers.  PRINCIPLE DIFFERENCES:   GMAT GRE CONTENT Analytical Writing Assessment: 30 mins Integrated Reasoning: 30 mins Quantitative: 75 mins Verbal: 75 mins GMAT verbal places greater emphasis on grammar, logic and reasoning. GMAT quant is harder if math is not your strength. Analytical Writing: 2x30 mins Verbal Reasoning: 2x30 mins Quantitative Reasoning: 2x35 mins (computer-delivered version: timings vary slightly in the paper-delivered test) GRE places more focus on vocabulary, making it easier for native versus non-native English speakers. If math is not your forte, the GRE could be more suited to you.   Format Computer-adaptive test Computer-delivered or paper delivered Test time 3 hours 30 minutes 3 hours 45 minutes How it's scored Total scores range from 200-800. The mean score among 750k test takers between 2013 and 2015 was 552, while a score of 700 would have put you in the 89th percentile Scores from 130-170 in 1 point increments for verbal and quantitative reasoning sections; scores from 0-6 in analytical writing Cost US$250 US$205 Score validity 5 years 5 years POPULARITY IN NUMBERS: According to the survey it is marked that around 92% of some 200 business schools in the US told that they accept the GRE, as an alternative to the GMAT, for entry into their MBA programs - this figure is up from 24% in 2009. GMAC, the organization that runs the GMAT, says that nine out of 10 students accepted to 50 leading schools in the US were enrolled using a GMAT score. HOW TO CHOOSE? The key to choosing the GMAT or GRE for MBA admission is to first identify which of your chosen schools require which test. If you find a school which might accept both, but could prefer one test over the other, then find out about that research upon it to clear your doubt through email, phone, or chat online. Most importantly analyze yourself that in which subject you are best at. Appearing for GRE or GMAT which would provide you more score and come to a conclusion. Playing to your strengths is also a factor. If the school you have chosen can confirm that it values both tests equally, simply go for the one which you think you'll do best in. Lastly, whether you’re taking the GMAT or GRE for MBA admission, make sure you go into the test fully prepared!  CONCLUSION: Also, according to the reports, Most of the business schools opt to accept GRE scores as an alternative to the GMAT so as to widen their pool of applicants and bring in students from various backgrounds like those with Economics, finance, Accounting as their subject. So the final thing you need to do is, first make sure that your program accepts the GRE. If so, then ask yourself which test better shows off your strengths. If you are unsure, you can always take GMAT or GRE Practice Test. Perhaps decide which would be best for you by checking your achieved scores with the GMAT Scores and you can do the same for the GRE by comparing your score to the average GRE Scores. If you score significantly better on one, then the answer is clear. If there isn’t much difference, spend a proper time analyzing each test to see which one suits your skill set better. And hence decide accordingly whether to go for GRE or GMAT?
