In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959. The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. The IIT system has sixteen Institutes of Technology. The first of these to be instituted is at Kharagpur (estb. 1951), Mumbai (est. 1958), Chennai (estb. 1959), Kanpur (estb. 1959), Delhi (estb. 1961), Guwahati (estb. 1994) and Roorkee (estb. 1847, joined IITs in 2001).IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 8000 students and 1250 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares. IIT Madras Adds Career Opportunities in Civil Services

Students visit the international conference and undertake to the internships throughout the tenure of the relevant program. Development Studies is the multidisciplinary branch of the social science which encompasses to the subjects such as the economics, political science, history, international relations, sociology, etc, so as to study for the evolution of the nations and the economies. This area of the study is also referred and focuses over solving the major of the societal problems through the suitable theories, tools and other of the methods.

Although the IITs are mainly over the focused and associated with the technical subjects, and the growing of the need for holistic education prompted them to introduce the Development Studies. Through most of the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) offer PG courses in Development Studies, IIT Madras is one the first to offer for it and the undergraduate (UG) level. The integrated Master’s Course in Development Studies offered by IIT Madras (IIT M), launched in 2006, follows with a multidisciplinary approach. The course is also designed so as to include three of the thematic modules on gender, science, technology and the development and to the urbanization, said by Umakant Dash, HOD, Department of Humanities and the Social Sciences, IIT-M.

During the first of the two years, students follow with a common curriculum. Post to that, based over their performances and preference, they either specialize over the departments like the Development Studies or the English Studies, says as Dash while talking to the Education Times.

Job Opportunities
A degree for the Development Studies opens up with several of the career paths such like the development in through the grassroots organizations, the employment in the national and of the international NGOs, consultancies, donor agencies and to the corporate sector (corporate social responsibility). It also enables the students who are interested in pursuing a career in the Civil Services or to the academy.

The IIT advantage
Over there one of the biggest advantages for pursuing a development course at the dominantly technical institute such as the IIT is a lot of peer learning opportunities in the various domains. Students also here get access and the exposure to the same culture and the resources says as Dash. Candidates here not only gain the subject knowledge but also technical knowledge relevant for the course. “For instance, the students who enroll in the development studies program can here also take up the Mathematics classes same as the BTech students. Also, the same minors are available to the engineering students” said Dash.

Entry Requirements
The students here for the integrated master’s program at the IIT Madras are here being selected throughout the Humanities and the Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) conducted by the institute each year in the month of May, the present intake is where about 45 students per year.

Most students at IIT Madras reside in the hostels, where extracurricular activities complement the academic routine. The campus has 18 hostels, of which four, Sharavati, Sarayu, Sabarmati and the recently (2017) constructed Tunga are exclusively for women. In earlier times each hostel had attached dining facilities but all of them have been closed down. Dining facilities are provided in three centralized halls dubbed 'Nilgiri', 'Vindhya' and 'Himalaya'. The hostels may accommodate undergraduate and graduate students, though they tend to keep the two apart. Students are assigned to hostels at the time of admission, where they usually spend their entire stay at the Institute. The hostels are named after the principal rivers of India and the campus buses used to be named after mountains, resulting in an epigram about IIT Madras that it is the only place where the mountains move and the rivers remain still. With the discontinuance of naming of buses and the mess halls being named Vindhya and Himalaya, this epigram is no longer meaningful.
